Young farmers under the KIC Young Farmer Business Academy (YFBA) in the Ejura Sekyeredumase Municipality of the Ashanti Region have received hands-on post-harvest training aimed at reducing losses and improving the quality of their produce.

The training sessions were delivered by the Ejura College of Agriculture and Mechanization Center Technical Team across the communities of Kasei Nkwanta, Baalana, Dome, Bouayaase, Anyinasu, and Beme, with a dedicated session for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

Participants were taken through practical methods for sorting, drying, and storage, helping them preserve their harvests, reduce spoilage, and maintain quality, especially during periods of low market prices.

Strengthening Farmer Resilience and Market Readiness

Post-harvest losses remain one of the biggest challenges facing smallholder farmers in Ghana, often wiping out a significant portion of income after months of hard work. Through this intervention, KIC is equipping young farmers with practical knowledge to protect their harvests and improve their earning potential.

Speaking during one of the training sessions, a member of the Ejura College Technical Team emphasized the importance of proper post-harvest handling:

“Many farmers lose a large part of their produce after harvest because of poor handling and storage. What we are teaching here are simple, affordable techniques that can significantly reduce losses and help farmers get better prices for their crops,” Margaret Mac Lomotey, Technical team lead – Ejura College of Agriculture and Mechanization Center explained.

Impact on Young Farmers

For beneficiaries, the training has already begun to change how they think about farming beyond production.

“I used to rush to sell my maize immediately after harvest because I didn’t know how to store it well,” said Azumah Seidu, a YFBA beneficiary from Baalana. “Now I understand how to dry and store my produce properly. This means I can wait for better prices and make more profit from my farm.”

Another beneficiary, Sharifa Moro, a young farmer from Anyinasu, described how the training has boosted his confidence:

“This training has opened my eyes. I thought farming ended when you harvest, but now I see that what you do after harvest is just as important. I feel more confident that I can protect my crops and grow my business,” she said.

Inclusive Training for All

In line with KIC’s commitment to inclusive development, a dedicated training session was organized for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to ensure that all young farmers, regardless of physical ability, have access to essential agribusiness knowledge and support.

This inclusive approach reflects KIC’s broader vision of building a youth agribusiness ecosystem that leaves no one behind.

Building Market-Ready Young Farmers

The post-harvest training forms part of the broader KIC Young Farmer Business Academy (YFBA) program, which supports young farmers with skills development, mentorship, and practical agribusiness knowledge to build resilient and market-ready enterprises.

By strengthening post-harvest practices, KIC is helping young farmers not only increase productivity but also improve income stability and long-term sustainability.

Through the KIC Young Farmer Business Academy (YFBA), a total of 7,594 participants have been trained and supported with agricultural inputs, strengthening youth participation, productivity, and resilience across Ghana’s agribusiness value chains.

A Call to Partners

As KIC continues to scale the Young Farmer Business Academy across Ghana, we call on partners, institutions, and development stakeholders to support the expansion of farmer training, post-harvest infrastructure, and agribusiness capacity building.
