A Decade of empowering Women in Agribusiness: The KIC Story

Every year on International Women’s Day, the world pauses to recognize the achievements of women and renew the commitment to gender equality. This year’s celebration on the theme: “Give to Gain” emphasizes that by investing in equal opportunities, education, and support for women, we help create thriving communities.

For the past decade, Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC) has stood as a powerful catalyst for empowering women in agriculture and agribusiness in Ghana. Through strategic programs, innovation support, training, and funding opportunities, KIC has helped over 20,000 women transform ideas into thriving enterprises, strengthen their leadership, and contribute meaningfully to food security and economic development.

Ten Years of Impact: Transforming Women’s Lives

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s economy, yet women who form a significant portion of the agricultural workforce have historically faced barriers to finance, technology, land ownership, and business development support. Recognizing these challenges, KIC has intentionally created programs that open doors for women across the agribusiness value chain.

Over the past ten years, KIC has supported female entrepreneurs with:

• Capacity-building programs that equip women with entrepreneurial, financial, technical and livelihood skills.
• Seed funding and investment readiness support that enable women-led startups to scale their ideas into sustainable businesses.
• Innovation platforms that encourage women to develop technology-driven solutions to agricultural challenges.
• Market access opportunities that connect women-led businesses to networks, investors, and customers.

Through flagship initiatives such as the KIC Agritech Challenge Pro and Women’s Bootcamp, young women innovators have been encouraged to develop solutions that address pressing issues in agriculture, from climate-smart farming technologies to post-harvest solutions.

One inspiring example is Naa Ayeley, founder of Sunnify, a KIC supported agribusiness developing mobile solar drying technology to improve sustainable drying and storage practices. Her work represents the growing wave of female innovators redefining agriculture through technology.

Across Ghana, similar stories are unfolding, women who once struggled to access opportunities are now leading enterprises, creating jobs, and inspiring other young women to see agriculture not just as a livelihood but as a powerful avenue for innovation and leadership.

Beyond Entrepreneurship: Building Confidence and Leadership

KIC’s impact on women extends beyond business growth. Participation in KIC programs has strengthened the confidence, visibility, and leadership capacity of women in the agricultural sector.

Many beneficiaries have gone on to mentor young entrepreneurs, lead community initiatives, and advocate for inclusive agricultural policies. In doing so, they are helping to reshape the narrative around women in agriculture, from laborers to innovators, leaders, and job creators.

This ripple effect is particularly significant in rural communities where empowered women often reinvest their success into their families, communities, and local economies.

The Role of Partnerships

The success of KIC’s women-focused initiatives has been made possible through strong partnerships with institutions, investors, development organizations, and private sector actors committed to advancing gender inclusion.

These collaborations have enabled the expansion of training programs, funding opportunities, and innovation platforms that ensure women entrepreneurs are not left behind in Africa’s agricultural transformation.

Scaling Impact for the Next Decade

While significant progress has been made, the journey toward gender equality in agriculture is far from complete. Women still face systemic barriers that limit their ability to fully participate and benefit from the sector.

Looking ahead, KIC is committed to deepening its impact by:

1. Increasing participation of women in agritech innovation
Encouraging more women to develop technology-driven agricultural solutions.
2. Expanding access to financing for women-led agribusinesses
Supporting women entrepreneurs to become investment-ready and connect with investors.
3. Strengthening mentorship and leadership development
Creating networks where experienced women entrepreneurs mentor the next generation.
4. Promoting inclusive agricultural ecosystems
Working with policymakers and industry leaders to create an enabling environment for women in agriculture.
5. Leveraging digital tools and climate-smart innovations
Ensuring women are equipped to lead in the evolving agricultural landscape.

Celebrating Women, Inspiring the Future

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, the story of Kosmos Innovation Center reminds us that empowering women is not just about equality, it is about unlocking the full potential of societies and economies.

Over the past decade, KIC has demonstrated that when women are given the right opportunities, resources, and support, they do not only transform their own lives; they transform communities and industries.

The next decade holds even greater promise. With sustained commitment, collaboration, and innovation, the vision of a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous agricultural sector, led equally by women and men can become a reality.

Because when women rise, agriculture thrives, and nations prosper.
