Agrimercarb’s insect protein innovation is helping safeguard aquaculture

As Ghana’s aquaculture sector expands to meet growing demand for locally produced fish, so is the soaring cost of quality fish feed. At the center of this challenge is protein meal, the most expensive component of fish feed. Agrimercarb, a promising agritech startup supported by the Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC), is offering a game-changing solution.

Agrimercarb produces high-quality, consistent protein meal derived from black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), which are fed on locally sourced organic waste. This innovative model not only reduces the cost of protein meal but also contributes to sustainable agriculture by turning waste into a valuable resource.

“Agrimercarb’s insect protein is a viable, eco-friendly alternative to imported fishmeal, reducing feed costs while improving fish health. By integrating frass, a nutrient-rich byproduct of BSFL, as a natural condiment in the feed, we offer farmers a product that is not only cheaper but also healthier for their fish and the environment.” says Luther Jesse Quashie, Co-founder of Agrimercarb

Ghana’s dependence on imported fishmeal has long made the local aquaculture sector vulnerable to price fluctuations and supply chain disruptions. Agrimercarb’s localized production model provides a more stable, affordable, and sustainable supply of protein meal, enabling smallholder farmers to remain competitive.

“We are excited about Agrimercarb’s bold approach to tackling systemic challenges in aquaculture. Their work aligns perfectly with KIC’s mission to support innovative agribusinesses that are transforming food systems sustainably and inclusively, “ Benjamin Gyan-Kesse, Executive Director of the Kosmos Innovation Center, expressed confidence in Agrimercarb’s potential.

With growing traction in Ghana and beyond, Agrimercarb is poised to lead a new era of sustainable aquaculture and resilient feed systems in West Africa.

Working in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, KIC is committed to empowering young people to find innovative solutions that also create job opportunities.
