KIC to Commission Ultra-Modern Hardware Center of Excellence in Ejisu

In a significant boost to Ghana’s technology and agricultural sectors, Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC) is set to officially commission its cutting-edge Hardware Center of Excellence (CoE) in Ejisu, Kumasi.

The grand opening, scheduled for Wednesday, November 12, 2025, marks a pivotal moment for young entrepreneurs seeking to develop locally manufactured solutions for the agri-adjacent sectors.

The new center, established with support from Mastercard Foundation, is positioned as a world-class makerspace designed to help innovators transform digital concepts into physical, market-ready products, thereby creating jobs and fostering entrepreneurship. Its opening just two days before the KIC School Farm Awards in Kumasi reinforces the city’s strategic importance as a hub for agricultural innovation and youth empowerment.

The primary motivation behind the Ejisu-based Center of Excellence is to address the critical gap faced by start-ups: the lack of access to specialized equipment for prototyping, design, and fabrication. For innovators in the agricultural sector, where solutions often require durable machinery, sophisticated electronics, or specialized packaging, this access is non-negotiable.

The CoE is envisioned as a comprehensive facility that will empower young entrepreneurs to bring their solutions to life, ranging from smart irrigation systems to advanced food processing technologies. The center will serve both KIC start-ups emerging from its renowned Business Incubation Program, as well as external start-ups looking to access regulatory prototyping and design services.

To facilitate this tangible development, the Center of Excellence is equipped with six highly specialized Innovation Laboratories, ensuring comprehensive support across the entire hardware development cycle:

1. Food Innovation Lab: A critical resource providing facilities for testing and developing new food products, optimizing processing methods, and ensuring compliance in packaging and safety.2. Electronics Lab: Serving as the nerve center for AgriTech, this lab is dedicated to the development of electronic components crucial for modern agricultural monitoring and automation systems.3. Mechatronics Lab: Essential for the development of smart, automated agricultural machinery and robotic systems, driving efficiency and precision farming.4. Computer Design Lab: Focused on the digital conception and visualization of agricultural products, systems, and machinery before physical construction begins.5. Metal Fabrication Lab: Crucial for creating durable, high-strength metal components and structures required for agricultural tools and machinery.6. Woodwork Lab: Providing the tools and equipment necessary to cater to projects that require wooden components, such as specialized drying racks or packaging prototypes. The commissioning on November 12th kicks off a massive week for KIC in Kumasi. The opening of the Hardware Center of Excellence provides the practical, physical infrastructure necessary to support the same entrepreneurial spirit celebrated at the KIC School Farm Awards on November 14th. The new center is expected to accelerate the growth of homegrown AgriTech solutions, solidifying Ghana’s role as a regional leader in agricultural innovation and entrepreneurship, and directly helping young people transition their ideas into successful work opportunities.
